a million penguins

Ethical guidelines

From PenguinWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

A Million Penguins is an experiment in creativity and community - it will only work if we work as a community and leave our egos at the door, next to the coat-rack. Above all, remember always that all contributions may be edited, altered or removed by other contributors. Below are a few guidelines which we hope will make this collaborative exercise as harmonious as possible - but treating other users and their writing with respect will be key to producing a successful wikinovel.

Register yourself and sign in but do not use signatures on the wikinovel itself.

The main page is for the novel itself, only. Put anything else such as comments and discussion on the Main Page Discussion. There will be someone there to read and respond if necessary.

Remember that contributors to the wikinovel may come from different cultures and countries and might express different views or perspectives - be respectful of these differences. Including the idea that other people may not be respectful of differences. Be respectful of disrespect, except inasmuch as you cannot be, in your difference.

Please be respectful of issues of decency and legality on matters of sexually explicit language, and potentially controversial areas such as race, gender and sexuality.

Be polite.

Value consensus and discussion.

Do not upload copyrighted material or material that you have not personally created yourselfs.

Recognize your own biases [is this possible?] and keep them in check.

Criticism should be positive; be generous with praise.

Please limit individual contributions to 250 words. Overlong entries will be deleted. A Million Penguins is not a forum for submission of entire novels or short stories - Penguin are not doing this to find new talent.

As with other websites, forums and discussion boards, every user of A Million Penguins is a real person with real feelings. Think before you edit, delete or type.

And again, treat other users and their contributions to this experiment as you would want your contributions treated.

A Million Penguins is scheduled to last five weeks, so please write regularly and keep the story going and growing.
